NHS Highland
Position Statement regarding Paid As If At Work while on Annual Leave/Sick Leave update
We are providing a joint position statement on the above as a means of keeping staff informed of the progress in calculating potential back pay in accordance with NHS Circular PCS (AFC) 2008/12.
Lorn & Islands Hospital, Oban
Arrears of pay for existing employees in 4 different Ward areas in the Lorn & Islands Hospital was paid in December 2016;  in addition employees who left the service between 1 October 2008 and 30 June 2015 and who submitted a letter requesting payment of arrears have also been paid.
Raigmore Hospital, Inverness
Since 21 November 2016, dedicated full-time administrative support has been appointed to extract the required information from SSTS (Scottish Standard Time System) to identify the annual leave and sick leave of each staff member who works rotational shifts.  This has been completed for the period 4 March 2013 to 30 June 2015.  Work has now commenced in comparing what has been paid during these periods of leave against the agreed virtual roster.  Archived SSTS information has been requested for the period 1 October 2008 to 3 March 2013 and the same exercise will be undertaken for this period.
Work is nearing completion for year 2013/14 and it is anticipated that payment of any arrears of pay for this period only, could be paid in May 2017.  It has been agreed that payment of any arrears due will be paid as and when each financial year has been completed, rather than waiting for the data for each financial year to be completed. 
Victoria Hospital, Rothesay, Bute
Recalculation of arrears of pay for staff in Victoria Hospital, Rothesay has now been completed and payment will be made in the March 2017 salaries.  Leavers, who have requested in writing payment of outstanding monies, will also be paid in March 2017.
Belford Hospital, Fort William
Senior Charge Nurses at Belford Hospital are currently undertaking this piece of work, without additional resource.  Data has been submitted to the Pay Unit for the Accident & Emergency Team and payment will be made in April 2017 salaries.
Caithness & Sutherland Hospitals
Calculations are underway to pay arrears due from 1 October 2008 to staff working in the Rosebank Ward, Caithness General Hospital and this will be paid in April 2017 salaries.
In General
Staff can be assured that every effort is being made to gather the data that is required to allow calculation of arrears of pay for the period 1 October 2008 until 30 June 2015.  In the meantime ALL rotational staff are reminded that if you have any concerns about not being paid appropriately whilst on annual leave or sick leave it should be discussed with your Senior Charge Nurse on receipt of your pay advice slip.
A further joint position statement will be issued in early May 2017.

The Branch agreed to nominate Gordon McKay for the 'health male seat' in the UNISON NEC elections.  The NEC is the (UK-level) decision-making body.  We believe that Gordon is a good friend of the Branch, providing support and advice, accepting our invitations to come to Highland from time to time (eg at AGMs and regarding nursing revalidation).  Gordon is a passionate and committed campaigner, and will always speak up for the NHS, and the NHS in Scotland, at every opportunity.  He is also Chair of UNISON's Nursing Sector Committee in Scotland, and an active member of the Scottish Health Committee.
Two charitable donations recently agreed by the Branch Committee:
·        'A Helping Hand in the Highlands' - £50.00.  This is an organisation which assists with food etc donations to those in need.
·        Inverness Caledonian Thistle Youth Under 14s to partake in Dublin Cup 2017 - £50.00.  We will get pictures of the sponsored shirts.  This is in partnership with the Highland Branch who are also contributing £50.00.

'Best is yet to come'
The workshop aims to provide tried tools and practices to enhance health and resilience for people in transition from work to retirement.

'Cyber security'
Nowadays our computers, phones, and tablets are filled with personal information - but how can we keep that sensitive information out of the wrong hands?  In this 3 hour workshop you will learn about the most common cyber security attacks, but more importantly how to take steps to protect yourself.  You will see live demonstrations of attacks and learn how to spot them.  These tips will help you feel more confident about using a computer safely.  No technical knowledge is required.
·        9 May 2017, Inverness, 1.00 pm - 4.30 pm
'Alcohol Brief Interventions'
This half day session will allow you to become familiar with a brief intervention to support adults to make healthy choices around alcohol.
·        22 May 2017, Portree, 9.30 am - 4.00 pm
'Mental Health Awareness'
-          Understand the main mental health problems that people face;
-          Gain an insight into the experience of having mental distress;
-          Explore some strategies for promoting good mental health;
-          Be able to take a revised awareness to the workplace.
·        4 May - 6 July 2017, Wick, Thursday evening
'Computing and Online Basics'
-          Introduction to computer, keyboard and mouse;
-          Understanding what you see on the screen;
-          How to write and print documents;
-          Sending emails;
-          Searching websites.
·        26-27 May 2017, Inverness
'Union Learning Rep, Stage 1'
